US-based tanker shipping company International Seaways is reviewing investment opportunities aimed at bolstering its fleet.

“For us, as a new company, to come out on the market during a time when asset values are at their lowest in decades is quite positive. We really look at it as a time for us to be able to renew the fleet,” Lois Zabrocky, President & CEO of International Seaways, said while speaking at the 10th Annual Shipping, Marine Services & Offshore Forum in London.

According to Zabrocky, the company is not looking for newbuildings, but is making moves steadily, eyeing opportunities in the second-hand market.

“For us, the right approach is finding a high-quality second-hand tonnage, and we are refraining from the ordering of new ships at this point in time,” she added.

The investment into low priced assets is expected to pay off in the next 18 to 24 months anent anticipated boom in the demand side for crude oil tankers as the tanker market is expected to gain full recovery over the next two years.

The anticipated higher interest in tanker assets and equity is further fuelled by the higher scrapping of crude oil tonnage, which picked up over the last few months, especially in August, bringing more balance to the demand-supply side.

Just last quarter, the company bought two Suezmaxes constructed at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipyard.

Following the delivery of the tanker duo, the company’s fleet consists of 57 vessels, including 51 conventional crude and product tankers in addition to its joint venture participation in four liquefied natural gas carriers and two floating storage and offloading service vessels.

THE Panama Canal has received its 2,000th Neopanamax containership since the opening of the expanded waterway in June 2016.

The 9,504-TEU Cosco Yantian completed the milestone transit through the canal while travelling northbound from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel measures 351 metres in length and 43 metres in beam.

"Over the last 15 months, the expanded canal has repeatedly exceeded expectations," said Panama Canal administrator, Jorge Quijano, in a statement.

The Cosco Yantian is deployed on the Pacific East Coast 2 (PEX2) service, which operates between Asia and the Caribbean.

The container segment accounts for more than half of the transits through the expanded canal (54 per cent), while LPG and LNG vessels represent 29.2 and 8.6 per cent, respectively. Bulk carriers, tankers, car carriers and cruise ships also pass through the canal.

Euroports has just completed a major stevedoring job at its Terminal 1207 on the Left Bank in Antwerp

The job involving loading to capacity MV SALTA, operated by GMB Maritime Liner Services GmbH, in time for the scheduled departure date.

The modern, geared open hatch bulk carrier is the deepest draft ship ever loaded by Euroports at Terminal 1207, said Joeri Tielemans, the company's Commercial Director for Belgium and France. "That’s thanks to the new 18m deep lock here in Antwerp [Deurganckdok lock], which gives our customers so much more flexibility," he said.

The loading operation, using Euroports' mobile harbour cranes, passed off without any problems. When SALTA weighed anchor, bound for various ports in the Middle East and the Far East, it was at its maximum draft of 13.9m. That meant it was carrying 53,000 tonnes of cargo, with a total volume of 64,000 m3.

The cargo included 30,000 tons of steel slabs, 8,000 tonnes of steel coils, 20,000 m3 of cast-iron pipes, 6,000 tonnes of pulp in bales and reels and a few smaller shipments of steel.

Michael Koch, Managing Director at GMB, said: "This was a big job, with a diverse cargo, but we knew we were in good hands with Euroports: over the years, they've built up a solid track record, safely and efficiently loading an enormous variety of goods bound for destinations across the globe."

Terminal 1027 has a one-time storage capacity of 1M tonnes. Euroports handles a large range of cargo types, including non-ferrous metals, wind turbines and fruit as well as the cargo types loaded into SALTA.

Original news was published 26 September, 2017

Singapore’s oil company Trescorp is to launch a new 45-hectare terminal in Oman-based Port of Sohar with an investment of USD 600 million.

The new facility will feature six deep-water berths, with 25 metre drafts, one of them capable of receiving very large crude carriers (VLCC) oil tankers of up to 320,000 dwt. The terminal will be located in Sohar Port South, where a recently announced land reclamation project would create more space for industry.

In its first phase, the terminal will be equipped to receive, store and blend crude oil, fuel oil and diesel. Expansion plans for phase two include gasoline blending, jet fuel, asphalt and a lube oil blending plant.

Construction of phase one is scheduled to start next year, with an initial storage capacity of 600,000 m3, while future expansion plans will take the total storage capacity up to 1.8 million m3. The works would be privately funded with initial investments for phase one estimated at USD 187 million.

Operations are set to commence by 2020. As well as planned bunker services from Trescorp, SOHAR Port is currently in advanced licensing negotiations with two other bunker service providers following a recent call for tender.

The USD 600 million investment would be made in anticipation of significant growth in petroleum trading in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, as well as growing demand for bunker services.

“The forecasts for the growth of petroleum trading in the Gulf area are far greater than the available storage capacity, which is still relatively small compared to combined storage at Port of Singapore and Johor Port that totals around 20 million m3,” Hamood Al Hashmi, Chairman of Trescorp, said.

Marine facilities at the new terminal would ensure shorter turnaround times for vessels and faster re-exports, according to Trescorp.

“Refined products from Sohar will be traded and exported around the world to meet projected demand growth in the emerging economies of the Indian subcontinent, East Africa, China and the rest of Asia,” Al Hashmi added.

The Port of Bilbao in the Basque Country of northern Spain has started construction of an additional ro-ro ramp.

It will be the eighth ramp at the port and will feature a minimum load capacity of 250 tons (226.8 tonnes). Is this measurement definitely correct?

According to Uniport Bilbao, the equipment will reinforce the services that the shipping companies and logistics operators of the port community offer to the manufacturing industry.

The ro-ro ramp will completed by the beginning of next year.

Meanwhile, since July 2017, port companies Amarradores Puerto de Bilbao, Corporación de Prácticos del Puerto y Ría de Bilbao, and Compañía de Remolcadores Ibaizabal have been preparing a pontoon for the loading, transport and stowage of components for the Rentel wind farm substation in Belgium.

The pontoon was commissioned by the French shipyard STX, while the structures were manufactured by Navacel in Axpe.

The first structure, a transition piece weighing 730 tons (662 tonnes) and measuring 30 m in height and 7 m in diameter at the base, was loaded onboard BOA Offshore's heavy lift barge CC Biscay by the shipping agent Toro & Betoloza for onward shipment to the Port of Rotterdam.

The cargo departed the Port of Bilbao at the end of August.
