India’s port operator Essar Ports posted a record 19.62 million tons of cargo in the quarter ending June 30, 2017.

This represents a growth of 12% when compared to the cargo handling in the corresponding four-month period of the previous fiscal year, as explained by Essar Ports.

For dry and unit cargo, the performance was better, with the company recording a 32% growth.

The substantial growth in traffic at the company’s three dry bulk ports in Hazira, Paradip and Vizag, came on the back of heightened activity and capacity utilisation of Essar Steel,” Essar Ports said.

What is more, the overall growth in traffic was helped by the 60% increase in third-party cargo volumes during the quarter, according to the company.

As informed, the dry bulk terminal at Paradip Port surpassed saw a 131% rise in cargo handling.

Commenting on the performance, Rajiv Agarwal, CEO & MD, Essar Ports, said: “FY18 has started on a promising note for Essar Ports. Handling 19.62 million tonnes of cargo in Q1 itself is an encouraging sign and we are confident of sustaining our performance and grow throughout the year.”

Essar Ports, which has five operational port terminals at Hazira, Vadinar, Paradip, Salaya and Visakhapatnam, currently has a capacity of 140 MTPA. The capacity is to be expanded to 194 MTPA over the next few years.

Just three weeks after inaugurating its new berth, support areas and new cranes, Terminal Portuario Guayaquil (TPG) broke records by receiving the 11,000 TEU CMA CGM Rodolphe, the largest vessel to ever call at an Ecuadorian port.

“Only a few days ago we inaugurated an extension to our berth of 120 meters, in addition to new support areas and equipment, with the precise aim of receiving larger ships. This vessel belongs to one of the APL services that we receive and represents an advance for our port in its continuous support for Ecuadorian foreign trade,” Enrique Brito, TPG Executive Chairman, commented.

Brito added that STS Super Post Panamax cranes were recently acquired by the company. They were fully operational while the vessel was loaded and unloaded, which involved transferring 3,500 containers.

Completed at China Shipping Industry shipyard in May 2017, the ship is 299.9 meters long and 48.2 meters wide.

CMA CGM Rodolphe will be operated by CMA CGM’s subsidiary APL, to link Guayaquil with Asian ports while passing through the new Panama Canal.

Original news was published on 09 July, 2017

THE US Port Houston has completed the dredging of the Bayport Terminal, deepening the channel depth to 48.5 feet to allow vessel drafts of 45 feet. The improvement works facilitate the heavier loading of ships with containers of heavy cargoes such as synthetic resins.

The channel to the port's Barbours Cut terminal already has been deepened to match the 45-foot vessel drafts permitted on the Houston Ship Channel, reported IHS Media.

Houston is at the centre of a petrochemical manufacturing boom created by low-cost natural gas feedstocks. Annual US exports of synthetic resins are expected to rise by 500,000 TEU or more within the next few years.

Authorities at the port of Houston hope to maintain or expand its current 45 per cent share of US polyethylene and polypropylene resin exports but will need additional vessel capacity that the 45-foot channel drafts will provide.

Volumes of such resin exports declined by 31.4 per cent, year on year, in the first four months of 2017, according to data from PIERS, a sister division of JOC.com within IHS Markit. Resins made up 4.4 per cent of Houston's export volumes in the same period.

The port is currently embarking on a US$1 billion expansion and renovation programme at Barbours Cut and Bayport, which combined handle two-thirds of US Gulf container volume.

Houston has posted marked increases in container throughput this year following the addition in 2016 of two all-water Asian services by the 2M Alliance of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co, and by Cosco China Shipping.

January-through-May volume, including empty boxes, amounted to 1.02 million TEU, up 14.6 per cent compared to the same period last year, according to port of Houston statistics.
