Volga-Dnepr Airlines has flown an 88-tonne jaw crusher for the gold mining industry across Russia from St Petersburg's Pulkovo Airport to Sokol Airport in Magadan on board one of its AN-124-100 freighters.

The jaw crusher - which was delivered alongside other associated equipment and tools - will be used for primary ore crushing during the gold mining process in the Magadan region of Russia.

Volga-Dnepr loaded the cargo using the AN-124's on board loading system, which it said removed the need for additional costs related to hiring in specialised lifting equipment.

The airline's technical department also prepared recommendations for the customer on the positioning of the consignment on the trailer that delivered it to the St Petersburg airport.

Japanese shipping company NYK Line has launched Magellan Straits Express, a new, monthly South America roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) service from Florida’s Port Everglades.

The new service was scheduled to start on November 7, 2016, with the vessel Rigel Leader, destined for the Port of Santos, Brazil.

The service will also include port calls in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico, according to Port Everglades.

Port Everglades is Florida’s leading container port, serving as a gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia.

The port’s container throughput for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2016, amounted to 1.04 million TEUs.

Compared to the prior fiscal year 2015, total TEUs were down by 2 percent from 1.06 million, which port officials attribute to market fluctuations.

However, the port posted its best September throughput ever with 90,641 TEUs compared to 80,550 TEUs in 2015. Looking at growth over the past five years, TEU throughput is up almost 18 percent from FY2011 to FY2016.

In addition, bulk and break bulk cargo increased 13 percent from 1.56 million tons in FY2015 to 1.76 million tons in FY2016.

Breakbulk airline AirBridgeCargo is to add a new dedicated cargo service via Heathrow airport, delivering an additional 100 tonnes of capacity.

The new ABC service will operate an ad-hoc weekly service and will utilize free slots not priortized by passenger airlines.

“We are pleased to welcome AirBridgeCargo Airlines to Heathrow. Cargo is a little-known but huge part of our operations – in fact, Heathrow is responsible for 29 percent of all UK non- EU exports, virtually all of which goes in the belly-hold of passenger aircraft, making us Britain’s largest port,” said Nick Platts, head of cargo at Heathrow Airport.

The new service is part of a £180 million investment by authorities to double cargo capacity at the airport. The UK government recently backed a third runway at Heathrow, the first in over 50 years, to expand freight capacity and boost trade.

“Europe, together with China, has been our prime and anchored market since the very first day of our operations, showing stable results and supporting ABC’s performance, 2016 being no exception with 22 percent year-on-year growth of tonnage out of Europe during the nine months of the year,” said Robert van de Weg, senior vice president at Volga-Dnepr Group, ABC’s parent company.

IAG Cargo will launch two new routes from London-Gatwick to North America in the first quarter of 2017, adding Boeing 777-200 bellyhold capacity to Fort Lauderdale and Oakland.

The addition of these routes will bring the total number of IAG Cargo-operated US gateways to 25 from the summer of 2017.

The Fort Lauderdale service is due to launch in March 2017 and will operate four times a week, while the Oakland flight will also launch in March 2017 on a three times a week basis. Both routes will be served by wide bodied B777-200 aircraft.

David Shepherd, commercial director at IAG Cargo, commented: "For many years we have offered our customers extensive access across North America.

"The addition of Fort Lauderdale and Oakland to our network cements this position, offering access to places that we know are important to our customers and enabling them to do business more effectively across the globe.”

Major commodities likely to be shipped from Oakland include aircraft engines, electronics and fresh produce such as nuts and almonds, while key shipments from Fort Lauderdale include aircraft parts, technology products and jewellery.   With aircraft parts being significant shipments from both destinations, it is likely that customers will opt to use Critical, IAG Cargo’s newest product designed for emergency shipments.

IAG Cargo’s expansion in to California comes at a time where the state is performing particularly well. Its economy was set to grow faster than the national economy by the end of this year and inflation is set to grow about 5.7% a drop from 7.5% last year.

These new service additions are part of a dedicated network investment and will add to IAG Cargo’s existing service in to the US which currently comprises 22 gateways and over 800 flights per week to North America.  This extensive network allows customers easy and convenient access to over 350 destinations worldwide.

Freight airline IAG Cargo has launched a new service connecting New Orleans International Airport and Heathrow Airport.

The new route will start operation in March 2017 and will be served by a British Airways Boeing 787-8 aircraft. The flight will be operated to and from New Orleans four times a week and will offer bellyhold capacity of up to 15 tonnes.

“This new route will add to our strong network offering in North America, giving local businesses a valuable connection to global markets. IAG Cargo will help support business looking to trade in the region by offering a diverse premium product portfolio and opening new export routes,” said David Shepherd, commercial director at IAG Cargo.

The firm expects the new route will see demand for machinery parts and oil and gas component shipments. IAG Cargo is  the cargo handling division of International Airlines Group.

Lufthansa Cargo is set to transport around 700 tonnes of Beaujolais Nouveau (red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France) to Japan by mid-November both in the lower decks of Lufthansa passenger aircraft and in the storage compartments of its freighters. The bottles will first be conveyed via road feeder service from Lyon or Paris to Frankfurt, before being loaded onto aircraft for the journey to Tokyo (NRT), Osaka (KIX) and Nagoya (NGO).

Japanese wine lovers have circled November 17 on their calendars in red: on the third Thursday of each November, that year’s Beaujolais Nouveau traditionally goes on sale. The young wine is an export hit, with almost half of the wine produced having left the country in 2015. 700 tonnes of the young French wine set to fly with Lufthansa’s cargo arm/first shipment to Japan today.

The first shipment will travel to the land of the Rising Sun today on board Lufthansa flight LH740. The wine is officially allowed to be exported to other countries from 8 am today. The Boeing 747-400 with the first two lower deck pallets is scheduled to land in Osaka at 7:20 am. the following day.
