The government of the Republic of Congo has called for expressions of interest from firms to develop the Dolisie dry port project.

The project will facilitate breakbulk handling and is part of the Libreville-Brazzaville-Pointe Noire Corridor, which will improve transport links in the region.

The government is looking for firms to carry out more detailed study following €80 million funding for feasibility analysis from the African Development Bank.

“The Dolisie section of the corridor in Niari Province of southwestern Congo is seen as the missing link. A dry port is also planned for Ndendé in Gabon. The funds will also cover the cost of development of the Ndendé-Doussala-Dolisie road,” a spokesperson for analyst firm Africa House said.

The first liquefied natural gas filling station for heavy-duty cargo vehicles in Finland has opened at Helsinki’s Vuosaari Harbor.

The station is part of a country-wide strategy to switch to gas for road transportation, and it is expected to drive wider use of LNG as a fuel for breakbulk and project cargo operators.

“We find that opening an LNG filling station here where we have a major hub for truck traffic in Southern Finland is a perfectly natural move. We’re happy to be involved in efforts to enable new openings for environmentally sound technology,” said Jukka Kallio, director of Vuosaari Harbor.

The station has been developed by energy firm Gasum and will be followed by similar facilities at Turku in the third quarter of 2016, and Jyväskylä and Vantaa in 2017.

“The demand for environmentally friendly transport services is increasing. The growing supply of gas-fueled vehicles and the new filling stations will further improve the opportunities to switch to road fuel gases,”  said Jussi Vainikka, Business Development Manager at Gasum.

Construction crews using a specially designed cable-crane mechanism Aug. 21 lifted and lowered into place the first of 66 prefabricated deck sections for a new suspension bridge under construction on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province.

The lifting of the first, 221-ton “steel box girder” marked a major step forward for the project to build the longest-span suspension bridge across the upper Yangtze at Gaoxiapinghu, near Three Gorges Dam, according to a Ministry of Transportation report.

Each, 16-meter-by-32 meter bridge deck section is being delivered to the site by river barge and then lifted by crane about 150 meters into the air before being fitted to the bridge deck. The crane is suspended and can move on cables strung between the bridge’s two towers.

The lifting operation for the first section took seven hours, the report said. The entire operation, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, will altogether require lifting 14,500 tons of deck sections from barge to bridge.

The suspension bridge is part of an ongoing effort to improve the highway network in the Chongqing region as well as boost the upper Yangtze region’s economy.

Port operator Abu Dhabi Ports is to carry out major expansion of the Khalifa Port in the U.A.E. to expand capacity for breakbulk and container handling.

The initial phase of the project has started with Abu Dhabi Ports having signed a contract with the National Marine Dredging Co. to begin preparatory work on channel dredging. The final construction will include an additional 1,000 meters of quay wall to the port and deepening of the main channel and basin to 18 meters.

“This ambitious expansion is crucial to ensuring Abu Dhabi remains a global trade and investment hub as well as supporting our local industries. We are future proofing our operations to ensure we can continue to attract the world’s leading operators to use our facilities that will see capesize vessels, the largest in the cargo industry, come directly into an Abu Dhabi port for the very first time,” said Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Ports.

The port is a major hub for breakbulk shipments in the region and the upgrade work is designed to boost heavy cargo traffic via the Emirate once it is complete in mid-2018.

Breakbulk specialist Mammoet is to provide heavy-lifting services for the expansion of an integrated petrochemical complex in Johore, Malaysia. The project includes the transportation and installation of new reactor vessels weighing up to 650 tonnes.

The reactor vessels measure more than 100 meters in height and installation will involve an specialized engineering solution to overcome bottlenecks caused by low pipe rack around the construction area in the existing petrochemical complex.

Mammoet will utilize one of its fleet of PTC 35 ring cranes with long reach and small footprint to lift the vessels over the pipe rack from a nearby road. The PTC 35 crane features lifting capacity of up to 1,600 tonnes.

“Mammoet was able to provide our client with a unique solution that would optimize the handling of heavy vessels. Less movements on site results in reduced risks, reduced costs and a faster completion, reducing the overall time-to-market for our client” said Roel Wesel, solutions manager at Mammoet APAC.

Headquartered in Schiedam, in the north of Holland, Mammoet  provides a range of services from transportation and logistics planning to heavy-lift and crane rental.

Project cargo firm ALE has transported three out-of-gauge catalyst hoppers to Atyrau Refinery in western Kazakhstan.

The turnkey project involved transport of 814 tonnes of cargo and included stability checks, lashing and jacking calculations, saddles proposals, transport arrangements and all civil infrastructure works.

“ALE jacked-up the cargo using four hydraulic 130t jacks and six man lifts from the ground to the suitable height for the 24 axle lines of SPMTs to drive underneath the saddles of the cargo,” a spokesperson for ALE said.

The spent catalyst hoppers were each comprised of five parts and were transported in convoy through the center of Atyrau on conventional trailers and self propelled modular trailers under police escort.

ALE has completed a number of recent heavy cargo transports in Kazakhstan’s oil sector. The firm focuses on heavy-lift projects in oil and gas, civil, nuclear, offshore, renewables, petrochemical, ports, marine, minerals and metals and mining.
