The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated nearly US$500 million of funding for innovative infrastructure projects.

The funding was the latest tranche of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recover, or TIGER, grant program. The finance will be used for projects in 40 communities across the country.

“The projects funded through TIGER are as diverse as the nation – encompassing urban, rural, and tribal territories alike, and every mode of transportation from highways and bridges to airports and waterways,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

Some of the largest projects funded in this round include the I-579 Cap Urban Connector Project, which will receive US$19 million to construct a cap over a below-grade portion of Interstate 579; a new inland port in Little Rock, Arkansas which will receive US$6.2 million; and a highway freight interchange in Scott County, Minnesota which will receive US$17.7 million.

Growth in U.S. wind power capacity is forecast to drive new opportunities for the breakbulk sector, as the latest U.S. Energy Information Administration suggests that wind power capacity grew by as much as 12 percent in 2015.

Demand for ever-larger turbine sizes is creating opportunities for heavy-lift transport firms, and the EIA predicts that wind capacity will increase by 10 percent in 2016 and by 11 percent in 2017.

Two of the largest players in the windfarm sector – German conglomerate Siemens and Spanish energy firm Gamesa – recently announced a merger as they seek to consolidate in the sector.

While their dominant position is likely to increase competition for some breakbulk firms, it is a sign of support for the industry as a whole, EIA said. Many firms have face stiff price competition from roll-on, roll-off and container operators in recent years, but the trend towards larger, heavier turbines is predicted to tilt the market back in favor of dedicated multipurpose operators.

Authorities in North Carolina have backed plans for a US$270 million intermodal terminal in Edgecombe County, known as the Carolina Connector project, or CCX, to open in 2020.

The terminal will act as a hub for cargo interchange between trains and trucks and while the initial focus will be on containerized traffic it is also expected to attract breakbulk operators to the region and boost long-term transport infrastructure.

“This historic project is part of our 25-year vision for transportation because it facilitates efficient and cost-effective movement of goods, which is critical for job creation and economic growth. The Carolina Connector will be a game-changer for our state’s economy,” Pat McCrory, Governor for North Carolina, said.

The new terminal is under development by the state of North Carolina, the Carolinas Gateway Partnership and rail firm CSX and aims to eliminate more than 16 million truck miles annually and save the state US$16 million in pavement maintenance savings.

Taiwanese crane contractor Chi Deh has added two new Liebherr LTM 1300-6.2 mobile cranes to its fleet.

Chi Deh will replace two old LTM 1300-6.1 machines with the new six-axle cranes, each of which have a capacity of 300 tonnes and a maximum hoisting height of 114 m.

Company owner Han-Yen Hu commented on the acquisition: "We decided on the LTM 1300-6.2 as a result of its high quality, modern technology and flexible boom systems. The telescopic boom is very long at 78 m. With its luffing jib, which is up to 70 m in length, the mobile crane can cover a massive working range."

Chi Deh has around 40 cranes in its fleet - the largest of which is a Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1. It uses the machines on a variety of job sites across Taiwan, including power plants, chemical refineries, and construction sites.
