Driven by a strong growth in the container volumes, the port of Antwerp recorded its best quarter ever with a freight volume of 58.3 million tonnes.

During the quarter ended March 31, the port’s total volume, which increased by 7.1% on the same period last year, was pushed by a 9.5% surge in the number of containers.

The container volume rose to 32.6 million tonnes, or 2.7 million TEU, with March alone setting a new record for container volume with 980,000 TEU.

There was growth on all sailing routes, both for imports and for exports. The progress made by European container freight was the most notable, expanding by 14.5%.

Container trade with North America for its part was up by 14.7% compared with the same period last year, although the first quarter of 2017 in this sector was rather weak. On Asian routes there was growth of 7%.

“The current growth figures of 9.5% in the container segment not only confirm the need for additional capacity but also make it clear that the operational capacity limit will soon be exceeded and that an expansion in container handling capacity will become necessary much sooner than originally planned,” Jacques Vandermeiren, Port Authority CEO, said.

The ro/ro volume expanded by 6% to 1.3 million tonnes, with the number of cars handled rising by 2.3% to 323,901 units.

However, conventional breakbulk performed less well compared with the same period last year, falling by 3.1% to 2.5 million tonnes.

Liquid bulk experienced an increase of 4.6% to 18.5 million tonnes. Dry bulk finished the quarter at 3.4 million tonnes, representing growth of 7.4%.

Konecranes is set to deliver a Gottwald Model 7 mobile harbour crane to Italy's Terminal San Giorgio (TSG).

The crane, which will be commissioned in June 2018 in Genoa, will handle containers, general and project cargo at the multipurpose terminal. It is designed to use power from the port's grid in the future, reducing energy consumption and eliminating exhaust emissions.

The crane will be the terminal's second Model 7, with the first commencing operation in 2013.

Maurizio Anselmo, managing director, TSG, said the high level of performance and reliability obtained from the first crane, plus the availability of a local Konecranes service team, lay behind the decision to invest in a second Gottwald Model 7 adding that "the two cranes will help us to fully exploit the potential of our terminal, which is the premier multipurpose terminal in the port of Genoa."

The Model 7 two-rope crane, a G HMK 7608 variant, provides a strong lifting curve with a maximum lifting capacity of 150 tonnes, and an outreach of up to 54 m.

Marine terminals at the Port of Long Beach handled a total of 3.87 million TEUs during the first three months of 2018, marking its best-ever first quarter.

For the three-month period ended March 31, the port’s volumes jumped by 19.1 percent compared to 3.25 million TEUs reported in the first quarter of 2017.

Loaded imports were up by 7.3 percent at 267,824 TEUs, while exports surged by 18.3% to 142,419 TEUs. The Port of Long Beach added that its empties increased by 21.9 percent, reaching 165,015 TEUs.

The port’s March throughput reached 575,258 TEUs, an increase of 13.8 percent compared to 505,382 TEUs seen in the same month last year.

“Our March cargo jumped despite the shipping slowdown during the Lunar New Year holiday in China,” Mario Cordero, Port of Long Beach Executive Director, said.

“One of the most encouraging signs throughout this surge in cargo last year and this year is the operational efficiency at our marine terminals. We are handling record levels of cargo with no delays,” Cordero added.

Crane rental company Karl Scholl has taken delivery of a LTM 1070-4.2 mobile crane from Liebherr.

The 70-tonne capacity crane, which has a 50 m telescopic boom, will replace an older 60-tonne capacity machine in Karl Scholl's fleet.

Karl Scholl's Andreas Merkel said: "The LTM 1070-4.2 with a gross weight of 48 tonnes delivers benefits for road licensing and is therefore extremely flexible in use. The new ballast distribution now also makes it possible to reduce the gross weight to below 40 tonnes. That is very helpful for us since more and more bridges are now restricted to a maximum weight of 40 tonnes."

The crane will be used for assembling prefabricated concrete structures and hoisting air conditioning systems onto high buildings, as well as handling the heavy modules assembled duing the construction of transformer stations.

Based in Heidelberg, Germany, Karl Scholl operates 15 mobile cranes with lifting capacities from 30 to 300 tonnes.

UK’s Port of Felixstowe has taken delivery of its first two remote control ship-to-shore gantry cranes.

The two new cranes, the 32nd and 33rd at the country’s largest container port, were delivered on the Zhen Hua 23 from Shanghai-listed equipment manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co Ltd (ZPMC).

“These new cranes are the latest acquisition in our ongoing investment programme to provide the best equipment, infrastructure and systems for our customers. They will further enhance our capability to work multiple mega-vessels simultaneously,” Clemence Cheng, CEO of the Port of Felixstowe and Executive Director, Hutchison Ports, said.

Remote control quay cranes at Felixstowe “will improve the working conditions of the drivers, enhance safety and benefit communications within operational teams,” Cheng added.

In addition to the new cranes, the port is creating an additional 18,000 TEU of container storage capacity, upgrading its terminal operating system, raising the height of 10 ship-to-shore cranes on Trinity Terminal and has eight additional yard cranes on order for delivery in early 2019.

The new cranes are capable of working vessels with containers stowed 11-high and 24-wide on deck.
