The official launch of the Nor Lines RoRo service between the German Port of Cuxhaven and Norway took place on May 7 with the first departure of the LNG-powered 5,000 dwt short sea cargo vessel MS Kvitbjørn.

The newly built freighters, Kvitbjørn and Kvitnos, which are both powered by LNG, will in future leave the German North Sea coast from the Cuxport terminal bound for Norway once a week. Cable drums formed part of the cargo on board the freighter Kvitbjørn.

”The favourable location of the Cuxport terminal and its logistics expertise, particularly in the RoRo sector, played a major role in our choice of port,” said Sigurd Ur, Director for Sales & Marketing at Nor Lines.

The newly established RoRo service will connect the Oslo fjord in the south of Norway to ports on the west coast like Bergen, Ålesund and Trondheim and even include Hammerfest located north of the Arctic Circle.

Recently, Kvitbjørn became the world’s first vessel to operate between Asia and Europe solely on LNG as the ship’s bunker fuel.

Freeport LNG Expansion has closed the US$4.56 billion in capital required for the construction of the third train of Freeport LNG's natural gas liquefaction and LNG loading facility on Quintana Island near Freeport, Texas. With that it has issued the greenlight to CB&I, Zachry Industrial and Chiyoda to proceed with construction, the consortium responsible for the first two trains.

The construction cost for the combined three-train project is expected to be US$12.5 billion, Freeport LNG said in a statement.

The first two trains are currently under construction and are on schedule to start operations by September 2018 and February 2019, respectively. The third train will begin production by August 2019. Each liquefaction train has a capacity in excess of 5 million tonnes per year.
