KALMAR, part of Cargotec, is to supply four 45-ton capacity reachstackers in February in Hutchison's UK port of Felixstowe, 70 miles northeast of London. The reachstackers will be supplied with a telescopic Bromma spreader, which incorporates fully integrated overheight legs for out-of-gauge cargo handling.

"The lifting boom attachment options and rotation possibilities allow the driver to improve the work efficiency of the unit," said Kalmar's British marketing chief Dave Patterson.
The Kalmar has already supplied the Port of Felixstowe with eight reachstackers, three loaded container handlers and 15 empty handlers already in use.

The Hong Kong-owned port is the UK's busiest container port, handling 3.7 million TEU annually.

Wyoming wind farm to be connected to storage facility in Utah, deliver power to Los Angeles

Four U.S. companies proposed an US$8 billion wind power project to provide electricity to the Los Angeles, Calif. The mega-project would provide twice the energy as the Hoover Dam.

The four companies – Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, Magnum Energy, Dresser-Rand and Duke-American Transmission (DATC) – will submit their proposal to the Southern California Public Power Authority by early 2015, DATC said in a statement.
The 1,200-megawatt wind farm would be built in Wyoming, while the energy storage facility would be constructed in neighboring Utah. A 525-mile electric transmission line would connect the two sites. “This project would be the 21st century’s Hoover Dam – a landmark of the clean energy revolution,” Jeff Meyer, managing partner of Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, said.

A key component of the project – a massive underground energy storage facility – would yield 1,200 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to the output of a large nuclear power plant and enough to serve an estimated 1.2 million L.A.-area homes, Meyer said.
Linking the wind farm to the energy storage facility would enable the wind farm to function like a traditional coal, nuclear or natural gas power plant, reliably delivering large amounts of electricity whenever needed, based on customer demand.

Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy would build, own and operate the US$4-billion wind farm, located 40 miles north of Cheyenne, which would generate 2,100 megawatts of electricity. Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, Magnum Energy and Dresser-Rand would install the US$1.5 billion compressed air energy storage system in four vertical caverns at a site near Delta, Utah, 130 miles southwest of Salt Lake City.

Each cavern would be about a quarter-mile in height, 290 feet in diameter and 41 million cubic feet in volume. During periods of high customer demand, the facility would use the stored, high-pressure compressed air, combined with a small amount of natural gas, to power eight generators to produce electricity.

Duke-American Transmission would build the US$2.6-billion, 525-mile, high-voltage electric transmission line that would transport the Wyoming wind farm’s electricity to the Utah energy storage facility.

A separate, existing 490-mile transmission line  would transport electricity from the Utah energy storage facility to the Los Angeles area.

JAPAN's "K" Line is to focus on growing its non-container business in the areas of LNG, bulk and car transport, as well as to cut costs to maintain the viability of its struggling container shipping business.

The company's annual report shows the company made a profit of US$161.7 million for the fiscal year through March 2014 but its container business only just broke even, with just 47.6 per cent of the line's revenue generated from its container transportation business.
"In terms of businesses that contribute to a more stable earnings structure, "K" Line has particular strength in dry bulk carriers, car carriers and LNG carriers. We hope to make these particular areas even stronger,," said CEO Jiro Asakura, reported London's Container Management. "Stable earnings are generated by businesses in which we can expect a certain level of earnings for a certain period," he said in the company's annual report.

The shipping line currently operates 74 container vessels with a combined capacity of 350,000 TEU.

By joining the CKYHE Alliance along with COSCO, Yang Ming, Hanjin and Evergreen, "K" Line would be able to tap the alliance's combined capacity of 3.2 million TEU deployed on the east-west trades, representing 16.7 per cent of global capacity, based on data from Alphaliner.

"K" Line will also add five 14,000-TEU ships to its fleet next year, with another five scheduled for delivery by 2018, which is expected to lower costs per TEU. Meanwhile it will focus on reefer transport and other segments to improve overall profitability.
In 2013-14 its container cargo volumes grew by four per cent on North American and European routes.

As a part of the strategy to expand its logistics business further in Asia, the Japanese shipping line has agreed to establish a joint venture with Cool Japan Fund Inc. and Japan Logistic Systems Corp, and to construct and operate a cold storage facility on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City.
The new facility will have a total floor area of 9,300 square metres occupying a 20,000-square metre site.

Damen Shipyards and SeaZip Offshore Service strengthened their working relationship by signing another contract for two Damen Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) 2610 at Wind Energy in Hamburg. The two new vessels, to be named SeaZip 3 and SeaZip 4, will be mobilized in transporting personnel and small quantities of freight to North Sea offshore wind farms.

The new orders follow the delivery last year of two FCS 2610 – named SeaZip 1 and SeaZip 2 – that have been performing successfully at the Nordsee Ost and DanTysk offshore wind farms in the German Bight.

Although fundamentally of the same design, Damen has implemented the modifications to the already successful FCS 2610 formula.

“We have made a number of improvements to these two vessels,” Damen sales manager Roel van Eijle said. “Mainly in the superstructure and a better accommodation for the passengers.”

Both vessels will be built at Damen Shipyards Singapore and delivered to SeaZip Offshore Service, a sister company of the JR Shipping Group, by March 2015.

US$4.4 billion project to be completed within 20 years

Southern California Edison has submitted its US$4.4 billion plan to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to decommission its San Onofre nuclear plant on the California coast. The plant was shut down in June 2013.

The plan, called a Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report, includes the timetable for major decommissioning work expected to begin in early 2016 and be completed within 20 years, SCE said in a statement. The cost covers dismantling the two units at San Onofre, managing used fuel and restoring the site.

SCE also submitted an environmental impact evaluation as part of its report.

SCE has set aside US$4.1 billion in a decomissioning trust funds and has said no further customer contributions will be needed for the project.

Deepwater drilling today, onshore shale gas later

BHP Billiton and Pemex signed a memorandum of understanding to exchange technical knowledge, information, experiences and practices in activities related to the oil and gas industry.
Mexico recently passed legislation to open its offshore drilling development to foreign companies.

“We see considerable opportunity in Mexico following the recent economic reforms, and we are excited about the deepwater and the extension of the Paleogene play into the Perdido play,” BHP Billiton Petroleum and Potash president Tim Cutt said in a statement.

He said any fiscal terms would be finalized by early next year after a series of bidding rounds take place for the Perdido play. The oil and gas industry is now waiting to find out the final terms to develop up to 16 leases in the region.
BHP Billiton and Pemex are also considering onshore shale gas opportunities in Mexico, according to Australian media reports.

Fourth set of locks within 25 years, China expresses interest

With another year of construction needed to complete a third set of locks for the Panama Canal, the Panama Canal Authority has announced it plans to further expand the canal within 25 years.
“In 25 years I’m sure the fourth set of locks will be built,” Jorge Quijano, head of the Panama Canal Authority, said at a press conference. Quijano did not offer details on the next expansion. Quijano said the upgrade would enable Panama, which depends on the canal for US$1 billion a year in revenue, to win back global shipping companies that have opted for the Suez in recent years.

“We are confident that the new fees we’ll be publishing, possibly for the end of this year or early next, will have the necessary incentives to enable us to get back those clients,” he said.
The Suez Canal has just begun its own upgrade and plans for a Nicaragua Canal are proceeding with construction due to start by the end of the year. The US$40 billion project to Panama’s north is being funded by a Chinese company. China has expressed interest in a future Panama Canal expansion. In August, Quijano met with a delegation headed by Mo Wenhe, Chairman of the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and Wei Hua Wang, representative of the Chinese-Panamanian Office of Business Development.

“We are exploring our participation in all Canal projects, especially in the design, construction and financing of a fourth set of locks,” Wenhe said at a news conference.
