Europe’s largest trailer completes first transport

Collett Transport’s new girder bridge trailer has completed its first transport from Sheffield to the Port of Goole for logistics company Expeditors.

The cargo consisted of a 156-tonne steel casting manufactured by Sheffield Forgemasters. The casting will form the drop hammer in a large counter-blow forging press to produce titanium forgings, Collett said in a statement.

Using the STB 550-tonne girder bridge, Collett loaded the casting in Sheffield and transported it to Goole, a distance of about 80 kilometers. The girder bridge was accompanied by two 4-axle ballast tractors to pull and push the combination, along with two 10-axle Scheuerle Intercombi modules and Collett’s new 4-axle power booster module.

Police escorted the girder bridge as it made its way to the port during nighttime hours. Prior to the transport, Collett arranged a motorway lane closure to allow the vehicle combination to travel east on the westbound lanes to avoid weak structures.

At the Port of Goole, the casting was lifted by crane and loaded on a waiting chartered vessel, which sailed for the Port of Antwerp.

URAG, the leading German port and offshore towage provider based in Bremerhaven, has placed an order for two Damen ASD 2411 tugs. The contract was signed at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg. This contract follows an order placed in September 2013 for an identical vessel which is under management by Lütgens & Reimers in Hamburg. L&R is an affiliated company of URAG, both part of the LINNHOFF Schiffahrt Group.

The initial vessel, named Prompt, was ready for delivery within three months of the contract being signed.

The ASD 2411 is a modern, state-of-the-art tug with excellent manoeuvrability and outstanding towing capabilities. At 24.5 meters its size makes it ideal for restricted waterways as well as open water assignments. It has a bollard pull of 70+ tonnes and is built for durability, with a proven design and the highest standards of quality. Extra thick plate is used in the construction, along with extra brackets and fendering. It is designed to be highly economic in terms of both low fuel consumption and operating costs due to its reliability and rugged build.

Damen has delivered ASD Tugs 2411 all over the world. Both newbuilds, like the Prompt, will be built and outfitted according to the customer’s requirements at Damen’s partner yard in Vietnam, before being delivered to Germany in early 2015.

Unconventional resource could mean energy independence

India and Jordan will discuss ways to mine shale gas as both countries look for ways to achieve energy independence.
Leaders from both countries will meet in New Delhi in November at the Indo-Arab Business Partnership Summit, according to a Financial Express report. “Jordan could play an important role in our energy security paradigm, given the fact that it claims to have the second largest shale deposits in the world after the U.S.,” Anil Trigunayat, Indian ambassador to Jordan, told FE. Jordan has shale deposits between 40-70 billion tonne with a potential to generate 35 billion barrels of oil. India’s exact reserves are unknown, but reports say there are “huge shale deposits” in the coastal states, Assam, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with U.S. officials later this month and shale gas exploration in India will be one of the most important items on the agenda.
Currently, Jordan imports 97 percent of its energy, while India imports about 78 percent of the crude oil it needs. Earlier this year, Jordan approved the construction of a US$2.4 billion oil shale-fueled power plant in Attarat, with funding from the China. Guangdong Power Engineering will build the plant.
