DENMARK's Maersk Line has taken delivery of the Merete Maersk, the 11th 18,270-TEU ship that are being built at the Daewoo shipyard (DSME) in South Korea.

Ordered in 2011, the ship is joining the shipping line's Asia-Europe (AE-10) service, replacing the 15,550-TEU Edith Maersk, which is to operate Maersk's Far East to Europe loop (AE-2).

The Edith Maersk will replace the 8,400-TEU Maersk Saigon, the last of the smaller ships on the AE-2, which will henceforth be run with 11 vessels of 13,000-15,500 TEU, reported Alphaliner.

The Merete Maersk follows the Mayview Maersk, delivered in July. The 12th unit in the series, Mogens Maersk, is scheduled for delivery in mid-September, after which the AE-10 will deploy a full fleet of 18,270 TEU ships.

The last eight Triple E class ships are scheduled for delivery in September 2015.

Alstom and Brazilian engineering and construction company Andrade Gutierrez have formed a joint venture to make steel towers for wind turbines.

The pair will build the new plant in Brazil’s northeastern state of Bahia, in Jacobina, a city 350 kilometers from Salvador, the French power equipment manufacturer said in a statement. Each company will contribute about half of the capital needed for the project, which is expected to cost US$106 million. Andrade Gutierrez will be the majority shareholder with 51 percent of the new venture.

Production at the new plant will begin this year with the capacity to manufacture 200 towers each full year.

This is Alstom’s second plant in Bahia ‒ the first facility makes nacelles for wind turbines ‒ and its third in Brazil. Alstom operates another wind tower factory in Rio Grande do Sul. Around 80 percent of the national wind farms are in the northeast region of the country.

Brazil has adopted strict terms for developers who want to build wind farms. To qualify for reasonable financing through the Brazil’s Development Bank (BNDES), 60 percent of the components for wind turbines must be manufactured within the country.

402MW project located in UK waters of North Sea

Siemens will supply its 6-megawatt turbines to Statoil and Statkraft’s Dudgeon Offshore wind farm, under a contract valued at US$830 million.

The German manufacturer will produce, deliver and install 67 of its larger capacity turbines. Each turbine is equipped with a 154-meter rotor, the company said in a statement.

The 402-megawatt Dudgeon project is located 32 kilometers north of Cromer in North Norfolk, England, in the North Sea

Installation will start in early 2017.

KBR has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract from Gemini HDPE, a manufacturing joint venture between INEOS Olefins & Polymers  and Sasol. The Houston-based engineering and construction company will build a high-density polyethylene facility in La Porte, Texas.

The plant will produce 470 kilotons per year of bimodal HDPE, KBR said in a statement. The single-train facility will include new polymerization, pelletization, and railcar load-out facilities, plus upgrades to existing utilities and infrastructure at INEOS Battleground Manufacturing Complex in La Porte. The value of the EPC contract was not disclosed.

KBR will split the work between its Houston operating center and its Monterrey, Mexico, engineering center.

Replica lifted 150 feet in the air at NASA Space Center in Houston

Mammoet lifted a replica of space shuttle Independence onto the original Shuttle Carrier Aircraft at NASA Space Center in Houston. Thousands of visitors to the center watched as Mammoet’s 250-foot-tall crane lifted the 122-foot-long space shuttle into the air undefined reaching a height of 150 feet, equivalent to a three-story building, Mammoet said in a statement.

“The lift was challenging because of the awkward weight distribution of the replica and the safety concerns for the thousands of spectators,” Pierre Mille, Mammoet USA’s sales manager, said. “A space shuttle, even a replica, is designed to go straight, so it catches a lot of wind when lifted sideways.” The lift to the crown of the 63-foot the aircraft, a Boeing 747, took about 40 minutes. Mammoet carefully lowered the replica onto a 15-inch concrete foundation.

The crane was assembled at the site a week in advance. It took a day-and-a-half to assemble the crane and the same amount of time to disassemble it after the lift was completed.

Nurminen Logistics has completed  a challenging special road transport in Finland from Pori to Nokia.

The cargo was the Silver Sky, the largest boat on inland waters in Finland, Cargo Equipment Experts said in a statement on behalf of its member. Silver Sky measured 30 meters long and 7 meters wide and was built in Turkey.

The transport began in early August at the Mäntyluoto harbor in Pori. The height of the 250-tonne transport was 8.3 meters. Special arrangements on the route from Mäntyluoto to Nokia were extensive, including cutting off of electricity in 70 places, taking down telephone lines and the detachment of electric lines from pylons along the way.

Nurminen transported the vessel to Nokia, a distance of about 124 kilometers, a trip that took place primarily at night.

The lake cruiser will soon begin its scheduled voyages, the first of which will be from Nokia to Tampere along Lake Pyhäjärvi. It has a maximum capacity of 250 and can seat 150 in its restaurant.

10,000 tons of project cargo, including 2,200 tons of structural steel for HBI plant

BBC Zarate, carrying the first structural shipment for voestalpine’s new Texan plant, arrived Monday morning (Aug. 18) at Port Corpus Christi.

The shipment included of 2,200 tons of structural steel undefined welded steel columns, frames, beams and bracings undefined for the reformer building and the furnace tower. The total weight of the project cargo is about 10,000 tons, Port Corpus Christi said in a statement.

Austrian steelmaker voestalpine is building a US$750 million hot briquetted iron (HBI) plant at Port Corpus Christi’s La Quinta Trade Gateway. HBI is a key material in the raw steelmaking process.

When completed, the voestalpine plant will have the capacity to produce 2 million tons per year of HBI. About half of the HBI will be exported to voestalpine’s plants in Linz and Donawitz, Austria.  The rest will be sold to international customers and used to supply voestalpine’s strategic reserves.

The plant will be fueled by natural gas from the South Texas Eagle Ford Shale.  Production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2016.

150 tonnes of steel used in retrofit

Damen Shipdock Amsterdam retrofitted two antiroll tanks onto GulfMark UK’s Highland Defender and Highland Guardian, both platform supply vessels. In all, 150 tonnes of steel was used for the job.

Niron Staal manufactured the antiroll tank and hull sections, while the shipyard handled the installation at its 250-meter Panamax drydock. Antiroll tanks are installed onto ships in order to reduce the roll motion and roll angle during adverse weather conditions.

“The contract was completed within a six week lead-time only, from the initial steel cutting to the vessels’ delivery,” Flip van der Waal, managing director of Shipdock Amsterdam said in a statement. “The lead-in time was practically zero.”

Prefabrication took three weeks, including constructing the two 75-tonne sections and painting them. Overall, the 87-meter-long PSVs were out of service for six weeks.
