Europe’s largest trailer completes first transport

Collett Transport’s new girder bridge trailer has completed its first transport from Sheffield to the Port of Goole for logistics company Expeditors.

The cargo consisted of a 156-tonne steel casting manufactured by Sheffield Forgemasters. The casting will form the drop hammer in a large counter-blow forging press to produce titanium forgings, Collett said in a statement.

Using the STB 550-tonne girder bridge, Collett loaded the casting in Sheffield and transported it to Goole, a distance of about 80 kilometers. The girder bridge was accompanied by two 4-axle ballast tractors to pull and push the combination, along with two 10-axle Scheuerle Intercombi modules and Collett’s new 4-axle power booster module.

Police escorted the girder bridge as it made its way to the port during nighttime hours. Prior to the transport, Collett arranged a motorway lane closure to allow the vehicle combination to travel east on the westbound lanes to avoid weak structures.

At the Port of Goole, the casting was lifted by crane and loaded on a waiting chartered vessel, which sailed for the Port of Antwerp.
