474-tonne ferry for Olympic Games in Brazil

On Nov. 14, Cosco Shipping’s heavy-lift vessel Da Liang loaded a 474-tonne specialized ferry at the New Port of Huangpu in China for shipment to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The ferry measured 78.4 meters long, 14.8 meters wide and 13.8 meters high and has a cargo volume capacity of 16,000 cubic meters, Cosco said in a statement. The lift set a new record as the largest cargo lifted by the Da Liang.

This ferry was built in Panyu, Guangzhou. It is a double-ended aluminum passenger catamaran and can accommodate 2,000 passengers. The ferry will be used for passenger transportation during the Olympic Games at Baia de Guanabara where passengers can travel between Rio de Janeiro and Niterói. Cosco Shipping said this is the first such ferry of several it will transport for the event.

Six months ago, Cosco’s technical engineers began designing the loading plan in collaboration with the ferry’s architects. The port captain, the crew and technicians worked closely together on this first load.

“With great efforts, they overcame the negative factors from the overweight and oversized cargo, and the pedestal installation under the water,” Cosco said. The ferry was successfully installed onto the deck of the vessel.

The Da Liang is Cosco’s eighth DA Type III multipurpose heavy lift vessel. The 28,000-deadweight-ton vessels each have a tandem lifting capacity of 700 tons and a continuous flat deck for large cargoes
