Japanese-shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. has signed a contract with compatriot shipyard Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. to construct four next-generation car carriers.

The vessels will be delivered in 2017 and 2018 and serve on MOL’s worldwide car carrier services.

According to MOL, deck construction of the newly-ordered car carriers will be substantially altered to change the number of decks from the current 12 to 14. Furthermore, the number of liftable decks will be increased from two to six. This means two adjustable decks can be placed between two fixed decks.

“The newly designed liftable decks will offer greater flexibility in accommodating vehicles of different heights, improving loading efficiency and meeting demand for more diversified vehicle transport,” MOL said.

MOL named the car carriers featuring this new deck construction the “FLEXIE” series.

The newly ordered car carriers will be installed with electronically-controlled diesel engine with Low Load Optimisation (LLO) tuning by Exhaust Gas Bypass (EGB) technology. They will also adopt waste heat energy recovery system for generator engines and electric power consumption reduction technology. In addition MOL said that the vessels’ hull form design will be improved, especially for low-speed range, based on ship performance analysis of existing carriers.

The ships will also mark a step forward in wind-pressure reducing design, as their susceptibility to wind resistance will be reduced and thus improve fuel efficiency in comparison with existing vessels, reducing at the same time their impact on the environment.

MOL has taken an aggressive approach to developing innovative next-generation car carriers, and in 2012, launched the world’s first newbuilding hybrid car carrier, the Emerald Ace.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) subsidiary, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai (MOK), has placed an order for three 17,500 dwt multipurpose vessels from Honda Heavy Industries.

The vessels, which are equipped with two 78-tonne capacity cranes and can lift cargoes of up to 150 tonnes, are scheduled to join MOK's fleet from the end of 2016 to spring 2017. They will replace two older 12,000 dwt semi-heavy lifters from the company's fleet.

The ships are also equipped with ballast water treatment equipment, an energy-saving engine and have 30 m long box-shaped cargo holds with wide hatches, said MOK.

The vessels, which will have overall lengths of 132 m, a 23 m beam and 16 m depth, will be able to accommodate various cargoes, from steel products and heavy cargoes to bulk shipments.

The newbuild vessels will mainly be deployed on the company's liner service covering the Far East, Middle East and Red Sea.

Furthermore, the company is deploying two 13,500 dwt multipurpose vessels into its service this year, both of which have 100-tonne capacity cranes installed.

MOL recently formed a new brand to consolidate its breakbulk and project cargo handling operations, MOL Project & Heavy Cargo. The company hopes that the three new vessels will reinforce the activity of this new venture.

Port Corpus Christi opened Phase I of the Nueces River Rail Yard at a ceremony on April 10, 2015.

The Nueces River Rail Yard project includes a 9,920-foot-long unit train siding capable of storing a full 160-car unit train siding adjacent to the Fulton Corridor Lead track that serves Port Industries. Unit trains are increasingly used for shipment of grain, sand, rock, liquids, and other similar cargo. The new rail interchange, Nueces River Rail Yard, will initially consist of four parallel ladder tracks for a total yard capacity of 15,300 feet and 253 rail cars. This new rail yard will greatly improve efficiency of existing cargo movement at Port Corpus Christi’s multimodal facilities.

French Thompson, BNSF Director of Public-Private Partnerships said, "This is truly an example of a successful Public-Private Partnership and BNSF uses this as a shining example for similar projects across the state of Texas and the country as a whole."

This collaborative effort is a two phase project. Phase I is a US$17.8M construction project utilizing US$10M from a federal TIGER grant. Remaining funds are covered by Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Genesse and Wyoming, and Port Corpus Christi.

Commencement of phase II construction coincides with the opening of phase I and is funded by a US$22M grant from TxDoT and US$6M from Port Corpus Christi. With a scheduled completion by first quarter of 2017, phase II capacity will increase the NRRY to eight, 8000-foot-long unit train sidings and 1,247 rail car storage capacity.
