Navigating Daily Challenges in Oversized Cargo Logistics

Navigating Daily Challenges in Oversized Cargo Logistics

At UPCargo Logistics (Panama), daily operations come with numerous challenges, especially when unexpected changes occur. A recent disruption highlighted their ability to manage unforeseen circumstances. The initial route for a shipment was planned from the Port of Shanghai to the Port of Balboa. However, the flatracks were unexpectedly routed to the Port of Manzanillo, Colon, approximately 80 kilometers away from Balboa. The team only learned a day after arrival that the cargo would remain at the Manzanillo terminal.

This change led to several challenges:

  • Increased transportation costs for the client
  • Extra costs for road adjustments
  • Additional route studies

Scope for This Shipment:

  • Reception at the port
  • Port survey
  • Unloading of 2x40’ flatracks and 1x20’ flatrack at the port
  • Transport using lowboys
  • Police escort
  • Route study
  • Nighttime transport
  • Customs custody (as this involved moving cargo from a port area to a free trade zone)

UPCargo Logistics had thoroughly studied and evaluated the route from the Balboa terminal to the delivery point, just 40 kilometers away, with excellent results. No changes or adjustments to the route were required; the only action needed was to wait for the cargo and load it onto the transport vehicles.

Challenges Faced with the POD Change:

  1. Longer Travel Distance: The new route meant additional potential obstacles. During the route study, it was identified that they would need to avoid one of the toll booths on the northern corridor. The solution was to remove some jerseys blocking the roadway to avoid the toll.

  2. Time Constraints: The tight delivery schedule required careful coordination. Delays with multiple suppliers would lead to additional costs, so the primary goal was to minimize these expenses for the client.

  3. Rapid Permitting: In record time, UPCargo Logistics obtained the necessary permits, secured an assignment from a traffic police unit, and efficiently managed operations at the port.

  4. Proactive Measures: To anticipate potential disruptions, they had already scheduled port appointments and inspections in advance.

Successful Execution:

In the end, UPCargo Logistics successfully removed the cargo from the terminal with no issues. The result was:

  • A successful transfer
  • Minimization of extra costs
  • A satisfied client

The team at UPCargo Logistics emphasized that, in their daily operations, they frequently face challenges and last-minute changes. However, they are committed to providing concrete solutions for their clients and strategic partners. Their focus is on managing logistics in a fair, preventive manner, ensuring the effective and efficient fulfillment of client needs.
